Adena Springs Farm

701 Cane Ridge Road

“The original Adena Springs farm in Kentucky, consisting of 640 acres located on Route 60 just outside of Versailles, was purchased in August of 1989. The oldest known inhabitants of the land were the Adena Indians, who had been attracted to the area by quality of the water in the free-flowing local springs. The farm was named after the Adenas, both as a tribute and as a commitment to perpetuate in this land the grace, spirit and strength they instilled there.

In 2005 we purchased more than 2,000 acres in Bourbon County, KY, and designed a magnificent, state-of-the-art facility for this fresh land. In August 2007, we moved our entire Kentucky operation, including the all of our stallions, to Paris, KY, beginning a new chapter in our Central Kentucky history.

When Adena Springs began operation, it was with the thought that it would be a private nursery, designed to provide horses for the Stronach Stable racing operation. These goals changed dramatically, almost from the beginning, and the focus of the farm is now epitomized by our approach to sales and stallions.

From the start, the Stronach family has been firmly committed to offering the best stallion roster anywhere, and we are extremely proud of our success.

The late El Prado was Champion Sire in North America in 2002 and ranked #2 the following two seasons. His line is being carried on by his exceptional young sons Medaglia d’Oro and Kitten’s Joy.

Awesome Again carried the Adena Springs colors to victory in a historic renewal of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in 1998. He has gone on to be a prolific sire of top class runners, siring 11 Grade 1 winners, including four Breeders’ Cup Champions. Noted Thoroughbred Times editor John Sparkman said of Awesome Again: “…it is the sheer brilliance of his best offspring that ranks (Awesome Again) among the most important and successful contemporary stallions.”

Awesome Again’s best runner, and one of Stronach Stables best, brilliant Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, stands alongside his sire and is emerging as an important stallion in his own right. He was the #1 sales sire of his stallion crop for three consecutive years and is the clear leader of his crop with an Oppenheim ‘ABC Index’ of 2.48.

Macho Uno is another Breeders’ Cup winner campaigned under the Adena Springs black, red and gold and he too has become as a top class sire. He was the #5 first crop sire in 2007 and has sired such exceptional runners as the Grade 1-winning millionaire Macho Again and G2 winner and Kentucky Derby (G1) third-place finisher Mucho Macho Man.

Adena Springs has sought to offer North American breeders stallions from best bloodlines not only on this continent but from around the world. El Prado, for example, was bred in Ireland and raced in Europe. Adena’s current roster includes Silent Name, a multiple graded-winning son of the immortal Sunday Silence, and Danehill’s only Epsom Derby winner in North Light, who has sired a winner of the St. Leger S. (G1), the world’s oldest Classic race. The Brazillian-bred Einstein was a five-time Grade 1 winner in North America and we are excited about his first crop of foals, born in 2011.

As if to emphasize both the breadth and depth of our commitment to the art and science of the Thoroughbred, Adena Springs/Frank Stronach has earned a record eight Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Breeder, including an unprecedented five consecutive awards from 2004 to 2008. We are the only breeder in history to win the Eclipse Award and the Sovereign Award the same year, and we achieved this feat four straight years from 2005 to 2008. Frank Stronach/Adena Springs has won a co-record nine Sovereign Awards as Outstanding Breeder in Canada across three different decades (1984, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010).

Frank Stronach/Stronach Stables has also earned a co-record nine Sovereign Awards as Outstanding Owner in Canada (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005) and a record-tying four Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Owner in North America (1998, 1999, 2000, 2008). The Adena Springs breeding program has produced three Broodmares of the Year since 2000: Baby Zip (2005), Primarily (Canada), Primal Force (2000).

Stronach Stable has bred and/or campaigned more than 225 stakes winners. This impressive collection is topped by Champions Ghostzapper, Macho Uno, Ginger Punch, Perfect Sting, and Phantom Light, Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Red Bullet, and the Grade I winners Game on Dude, Sugar Shake, Citronnade, Spun Sugar, Milwaukee Brew, Golden Missile and Collect the Cash.

Many of these runners have returned to Adena Springs Farm as stallions or as broodmares, ensuring the success of our program for generations to come.”
